J&J Taylor 1855 Safe - Handles Turn but Cannot Open

Hello,

I need some insight on how to get my recently acquired safe to open. It is a J&J Taylor 1855 safe. I have the code and am doing 4 turns to the left to first number, pass that number twice to the R to the second number, and pass (to the L) the second number once and stop at the third. I can get the handles to turn, but the doors do not move. Any suggestions? I've tried using different combinations +/- 1 number from original code. I've tried turning the dial the opposite way, but the doors do not budge. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

After setting the third number, you will probably need to turn it clockwise again until it stops. This is what withdraws the bolt.

Yes sorry I forgot to mention after the third number, I turn the dial clockwise about 1/8th until it stops. Then I gave move the handles yet the doors do not budge

How far does the handle turn? How far does it turn, when the lock is locked?

Both handles are vertical (perpendicular to the ground) in the lock position and they turn outwards approximately 45 degrees. When they are locked, the handles wiggle a little bit but don’t move.

If you did not forget the handle of the pressure bar, then maybe it is only the door, which is stuck? Without photos my only suggestion is, that you could try to loosen up the door with a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer.

I have photos, but unsure of how to send them on here. What is the handle of the pressure bar? Maybe that is something I missing.

There is the "Post Reply" button. When you use that there is under the text field an "upload attachment" tab where you can attach photos to a posting.

Yup, the photos are fine. There is no pressure bar. I would try two things:

1) Tap with a mallet around the edges of the door and try to turn the handles more at the same time. First the handle from the lock side, that from the other side. Never to much force on the handles. Don't hit them with the mallet.

2) Tap with a mallet round the edges of the right door and pull (not to hard) on the handle or rattle around with it. Maybe the door is just stuck with rust.

When you spin the dial without the code how far do the handles move? Some can turn 45' on the wrong combo.
Has the safe been dropped or tipped over?
Is the safe sat level?
If you can feel the dial withdrawing the bolt on the last turn its not the combo mechanism but the bolt mechanism.
Normally you would go 3,2,1 not 4,2,1.
