Floor Safe- new to me, old safe

So this is pretty elementary I'm sure to some but I have never seen this. It is a floor safe lid that someone brought in to have the combo changed, and they did not already have a combo for it. The part that I found unusual was the lock operation.

Once the correct combination has been dialed you have to push the dial in,

turn it counter clockwise to get the notch on the cam to line up with the fence, and it draws the bolts into the unlocked position.

ive seen a few in my day but that external fence and wheel is unusual, unless the ones ive seen, they were removed. and the depression of the dial? wow. almost like it was designed as a plug for a canon ball safe or something

How did they come to have the lid of the safe without the combo?

Good find for them....

The people in this town are a little different. It was probably someone who took the lid off and set it off to the side and left it and forgot. Then either sold it or gave it to the guy that brought it in to us. I have to go to a lot of houses and find combinations for safes that people have had for years and opened the door one day and didn't close it.

its a STAR safe. the dial depression is what gave it a manipulation proof label. Great little safe, also has hardplate and 3 relocking pins.

If your servicing the safe there are some tricks for reassembly.

I was able to reassemble successfully but I would love to hear the tricks you are talking about. I'm still learning so I'll take what I can get.
