Love the serrated wheels. Time to modify the lock so a long key turns a cam that engages those teeth until the key is used to 'unlock' the wheels. The the combination would be entered via the dial.

Thanks for sharing that safe lock, flywheel. :)

I've had it for months and the only way it's getting opened is with the combination or a safe tech drilling through the two inch space between the dial and lock body.

The lever nose NEVER touches the cam unless the correct combo is entered. The cam can only open when the dial is on zero and the triangular tab on the cam is only allowed to ride in the short track that is seen on the inside of the back cover. That's enough space to retract the bolt but not enough to touch any contact points when the back cover is on. When trying to manipulate with the back cover off the central spindle responsible for opening the cam comes loose or falls right out of the lock.

I like that too. What's the reasoning for that do you suppose?

I also notice the walls of the gates are slightly slanted?

Re: Group 1 Manipulation Proof Sargent & Greenleaf

The serrations are there to stop the use of vibration, or oscillation of the dial, to get the fence to drop into the gates if they are nearly in the right position.

I think the shape of the gates is to narrow the dialling error tolerance.

Thanks. That reminds me I was going to try that with an oscillating sander. Considering that the fence doesn't touch the wheels when the cam is closed it might still be possible.

Notice how the fence has multiple grooves running it's length.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. Thanks for that Mark.

This I'm not so sure on. I wonder if it has more to do with functionality rather than tolerances. Hmm, I dunno.

Oh wow! Yeah, that's very interesting.

Re: Group 1 Manipulation Proof Sargent & Greenleaf

The shape of the fence is the same as in a regular 6730, the 6730's fence just lacks the grooves to interact with the serrations :

If you picture a fence of this shape & the path it follows as it enters the wheel pack, it describes the gate shape in the 8400's wheels perfectly. This is why I think it is for minimising dialling tolerance. The drive cam seems perfectly capable of pulling the bolt, extending the bolt & ejecting the fence when extending the bolt, so I can't see what purpose the shape of the gates could serve.

Appreciate ya brainstorming with me, as this is the first time I've ever seen slanted gatest... so I'm like a curious kitten. lol

And now that you've laid it out a bit more for me, it does seem like the most plausible reason - to create tighter tolerances.

Re: Group 1 Manipulation Proof Sargent & Greenleaf

You do know that there are now viable techniques for manipulating these ......

No, I'm not going to post here (or anywhere else) how it's done. However it can be done, and sometimes quite quickly, so worth thinking about .....
