Re: Meilink safe company still in business?

Well, since there is no chance to get the combo from the factory, I took a regular carbide drill and sawsall and cut a big hole in the back of the safe hoping to get some ideas on the lock. There was no way to remove the dress plate on the back of the door because there is right-left divider wall that blocks its removal. So. I decided what I'm gonna do...cut the sides, top, and back off leaving basically the door intact on wheels. (Remember, this is a cheap fire safe). It took less than 5 minutes to get a hole in the back as big as a softball. I would warn others to wear a mask to avoid the asbestos in the lungs. I'll post pic when I get it done. I can only work on this on the weekends while at the ranch. There's always a boatload of higher priorities! With much of the weight removed I can move it in the house with air conditioning and "after hours" time.

I have another project too. It's an old Syracuse Safe Company safe weighing 800 or so pounds. It is open! I'm afraid to mess with it with my little knowledge of combos. It has a Yale lock. It's embedded in about 4 inches of asbestos (estimated) and I can't see around it very well. I can see the cam, but no wheel packs. I'm not sure if the cam is on the face side of the wheel packs and they are missing, or it the cam is on the back and I just can't see in there very well. I'll post this pic. If I'm breaking rules of post a new subject in an "old" post let me know.

Combo - Right to stop. Turn lever. Better make note of it! :D

Hi LAD.

I'm going to raise a boring health and safety point here. I hope for your sake it wasn't asbestos, but rather gypsum plaster (sheetrock) type material in there. Maybe it's not considered so dangerous in the US, but I can tell you in the UK, asbestos in old buildings is a serious issue. Getting rid of it is a job for specialists and there are government forms to fill out. A simple dust mask is not good enough at all.

It is the same here in the US.

Are wheel packs available for this old yale lock? It has 8766 stamped on the door bolt handle. Probably has nothing to do with the lock, but I thought I would throw that out if it could help.

Thanks once again....LAD

you might get lucky and find a dust covered yale wheelpack in an old lock shop or maybe at a flea market. salvage yards sometimes have old safes. it's a hit and miss when getting these older lock parts.

Re: Meilink safe company still in business?

I have an older Milink safe. It has a S&G lock. The dial says "Since 1899 Toledo,OH"
Mine was set to L to 40, r twice past 40 to 20, and slowly back L until it stops and opens. I bought mine at an auction 30 or more years ago. I changed my combo and it works fine.
I think it has 3 wheels and can be set for 3 numbers plus the stop number. It has been a long time since I looked.
Good luck....
