Handcuffs? Is a key possible?

A regular customer came into the shop today. He had purchased these handcuffs (I think they are handcuffs) at an auction for about $5. He is trying to find out if there is a key that exists for these things. He thinks they might be German made from some of the other stuff he found at the auction, and is hoping there is a universal key for them.

Anyone have any ideas? There are no markings of any kind that I could find on them.

Did you stick a pick inside to see if they are wafers/tumblers and/or single/double sided?

Looks like it might take a double sided Chicago key blank though...

The cuffs are identical to those used for escorting prisoners used by H.M.Prisons and the chubb keys used in the cuffs i have seen are similar to this blank key..

Heavy duty cuffs!! This maybe a dumb question, but have you tried shimming them open?

They are Chubb escort cuffs and use a Chubb AVA cylinder.

And shimming is impossible with these cuffs, no universal key either.

From what i can tell it would be difficult, if not impossible due to the 10 unsprung levers. John Falle sells/makes a decoder.

So at the very least it would be impractical to impression or attempt. The guy bought them for $5 because they looked cool so he probably wouldn't want to spend the money for me to order enough keys to "possibly" impression a key.

Thank you everyone for the great info, I really appreciate it. You guys are the best as usual.

tell him to send them to me, i can impression a key... after i figure out how... it shouldnt be hard once you apply tension... you must apply tension first then the wafers will bind on the key...

i think we should confer with kokomo on that before you try, that blank looks like its built for lever style cutes, as in, not with a pipin or a round file, but like cutting a flat steel guard key for a safe deposite box. sure, you could do it with a flat file, but you dont impression a flat steel or brass that way, we used soot (spelling) like, carbon from a flame to dirty the key, then get the mark, then file. i reckon you know this, im just saying i dont think this is your normal impressioning job.

Re: Handcuffs? Is a key possible?

The keys will most likely be impossible to impression, so I've been told. Keys are difficult to replicate by hand as well.

i've copied several keys by hand. its not that hard. so long as i have a vice/clamp, lighter, sewing needle, file and the keyblank.
