Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

I just received these two railroad padlocks from a family member. One is ADLAKE and the other is KELINE. Both keys are stamped "ADLAKE". I like to believe that these keys are originals. Both keys match the stamping on the back of the locks. One lock appears to be NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY, and the other appears to be BURLINGTON NORTHERN RAILROAD CO. (INC.). The NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY merged into the BURLINGTON. Both of these locks are like brother and sister, historically speaking. These locks are possibly my first complete railroad padlocks with original keys.

Here's a seller asking some change just for the key!

Congrats on acquiring those Lauren!

So what, if anything, would you do with those in terms of restoration?
I have a sneaking suspicion you're going to say they're delightful just as is :)

If I found an Indian arrowhead, I would not try to improve upon it.

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

Just got a few pancake locks and a few lever locks so spent the last 5 days reading and re-reading all of your threads/posts that I could find online. I noticed that you have not posted in a bit so wanted to bring this thread back up to see if your still around as I have many questions, naturally :)

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

Sometime ago, I defined the type of locking levers found in a SAMSON padlock made by CORBIN as "claw lever tumblers". These levers are found in many models of antique padlocks. There's actually an official name for these levers.

The first member that gets the official name of these levers correct- I'll post something nice related to it. I KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS QUIZ QUESTION.

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

Here's a clue: EAGLE LOCK CO. stamped one of their 6 lever padlocks defining the levers with this "terminology".

Thanks for the hint. "Interlocking" is my guess. :)

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

EAGLE labeled this padlock as "interlocking", which most likely defines padlocks that contain levers that lock directly to the hasp between the hasp and the key hole (commonly seen with hasps that have cuts on both sides, but not absolutely). I was able to impression this lock open (at great risk of ruining my homemade nickle-silver key blank). My key works, but the hasp spring is broken. This lock has a ward plate and the key does not rotate a full 360 degrees, by design.

Am never disappointed when I see your home-made keys, Lauren. Beautiful work. And a good bit of knowledge to add to my feeble brain. ;)

LOL I got it! My only other guess was Rumpelstiltskin :)
Beautiful work on that key, as usual. Thanks for showing it to us.

Cheers :)

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

Interesting trivia... and one hell-of-a key there.
