Beginner Locks to buy?

Not too sure if something has been posted already but I was wondering if
anyone knows any good beginner locks with one or two spools that I can challenge
myself with? My master lock NO.3 has been picked to death over the last day or so
and would like to progress slightly!

Re: Beginner Locks to buy?

You can take the top pins out and put one in a drill (replacing the drill bit with the pin) and leave the pin sticking out as much as possible while having it still be in the drill pretty solid. Spin the drill and use a file to carve the pin into a spool or serrated pin. There are excellent examples of people doing this on the forum if you look for it. I've made a few myself and they're pretty cool! They huge upside is also that you can make your own little variants and cool designs :)

Seems like a reasonable idea, I'll go have a look at some turorials and see what I think.

A good 'next step' might be any of the brass numbers from BRINKS.
Or a Master 140 or 150 (but they can sometimes be a little odd).
Either will give you some new experience with spools though.

:agree: Abus are great if you want to try out some spools. To start out look for a 4 pin like an Abus 55. It will have 3 spools. The 55/40 is basically the same as a Master 140. I think it might have a weakly serrated front pin though, not sure if the 140 has that but its such a weak serration that it makes very little difference in terms of difficulty. I do think that Abus locks give better feedback for learning spools than Master locks in the form of distinct counter-rotation when setting a spool.

I might go for one of them, sat for 10 hours yesterday trying to get a zone padlock and only managed it once.
Don't think I am ready for it yet!

Re: Beginner Locks to buy?

Well I ordered an abus 55 and a squire sal40, cost £11 in total with free postage on ebay. I was trying to hold off until I get out to Turkey to see what I could find out there but ...needs must, and I do need to progress a bit.

Re: Beginner Locks to buy?

My favorite padlocks for learning spool pins have been the cheap laminated steel Brinks 40mm padlocks. They're pretty easy to pick and the spool pins are really predictable. I would say a bit more predictable than the Master 140s. Might just be my locks though.

I bought myself a Squire Sal40 and have managed to pick it on numerous occasions.
Proud moment!

Just Purchased an Abus 55/40 off amazon for about $8. Paid for 1-day shipping +$3 (I WANT IT TOMORROW!)
