Cheap stubborn spool pins!

I am having difficulties with two locks in my meager collection. The first is a cheap HF puck lock 6 pin core the key works great picking does not. I can get two or three pins in the back set and then everything else gets springy when I try and force something the crunching and falling pins seems to be unending! Every once and a while I will get an open and usually it is quick. That one is in my naughty pile. I don't have enough locks yet to need buckets
I picked up a Masterlock 570 today it looked interesting and maybe had a removable core?
I have opened this one once but I think they have the same guts. I have not opened the 570 yet but thanks to youtube I have an Idea whats in it.
here is the video with the 570's guts and I will attach pictures of the puck lock innards.

Any help with how to defeat this type of driver? I cannot believe that this cheap crap is harder than my 140 or anything else I have tried yet!

Re: Cheap stubborn spool pins!

I find that some puck locks need to have heavy tension, A :prybar: might help.

I dunno, the photos show up for me though.

Welcome to the forum mylockisbetter.
Dunno if I agree with your name  but I'm happy you're here.

Some thoughts on your new Master 570. I remember my first one.
It taught me a great deal about tension, spools, & counter rotation.

Many locks have a spring that exerts a constant rotational force on the plug.
This brings the plug back to its' original resting position. However, Master locks
570 and 575 do not have a spring return. For this reason the lock becomes very
animated while you're picking it. It'll be much easier for you to not only feel, but
see what is going on inside. Actually, either of these locks are perfect for learning
to deal with spools. This way you won't confuse counter rotation with spring return.

After you reach a false set with your lock... try using very light tension
while you locate & set the remaining spools. I think you'll find success.

In fact, to give you an idea of just how light a tension you can use effectively with these:

I remember at the time I had a homemade tensor that I had left long... like 10" or so. lol
I could literally hang it there & the weight of it would do the work. Was a good illustration
actually. You could watch the handle go up with the counter-rotation as I lifted a spool...
then it would drop back down as it reached the shear line. The final pin would bring the
tensor up quite a ways, then the plug and tensor would swing down as the lock opened.

For me BosnianBill's video made things click in my head.(as far as spools pins).
I used to dislike spools, now I enjoy picking locks with them.
You can watch and feel the tension wrench moving up and down.
Once the plug rotates a little into a false, you know your almost there.

Thanks everyone for your help lots of practice with light tension and fail with a homemade pry-bar I have 3 opens on the master-lock today!
I found the slim wiper insert tensioner worked best for feedback from the lock.

if that's what is working for you great.
just watch out that the tensioner does not press on the first pin ;)
