Slaymaker Combination Padlock

Hi KP community,

I have this Slaymaker combination padlock I want to crack, and I was wondering if anyone knows the dial sequence.
There is plenty of feed-back when I rotate the dial. With a little pull upwards on the shackle, the dial 'clicks' at 57 and 9.
Thanks in advance.

Warder check out this web site http://www.vintagecombinationlocks.com/. I'm pretty sure it's RLR

Pull up on shackle and try LRL or RLR, stop pulling up when it opens.

It won't necessarily help you to open it, but the patent exists with drawings. Just Google U.S. Patent Office and enter 1837071 as the number. You will have to download software to view the diagrams, which they point you to. (I am on a tablet so I couldn't view them.)
The number came from the link provided above.

Any joy yet Warder? You prompted me to dig this one out and have a go with it.
Forgot aobut it actually, lol. I've had it for nearly two years. After a few days of
tinkerin' on and off... it popped while going through McDonalds drive-thru...
"One premium roast coffee with 2 sugars please" :D

Other than the dials, our locks look to be nearly identical.
One lock is not much of a test group to zero in on a consistant method, but for what it's worth...

Just like you, I had 2 (two) areas that indicated while pulling on the shackle... roughly 45 & 10
45 was VERY definitive.... 10, not so much. The combination ended up being 40 - 10 - 45

So on yours... you caught 57 and 9. I would roll with the assumption that those are your last two digits.
If 57 felt the most distinct, try it as the 3rd digit. Use 9 as the 2nd. Roll the last one around every 2.5 incs.

X - 9 - 57

12.5 - 9 - 57
15 - 9 - 57
17.5 - 9 57
20 - 9 - 57
etc.....

If that doesn't work, flip the numbers around and try X - 57 - 9.
The gate's are nearly 5 increments wide, but go every 2.5 just to be safe.

The RLR dialing configuration is EXACTLY like a MasterLock Combination...
1. RIGHT 3 times... stop on 1st number
2. LEFT one full turn PAST 1st number... stop on 2nd number
3. RIGHT... stop at 3rd number. Pull shackle

And that's the same sequence with a Lockwood combination padlock, rotate 3 turns C/W to neutralise the discs. I went through all that mathematical stuff to get the first two numbers first. My lock had a keyway as well so I was able to pick it open first and then watched the discs rotate as I turned the dial, that was how I discovered the full rotation and stopping on second time round for the second number.

I purchased one of these a few weeks ago - open. Any idea how to get the combo while it's stuck open?

If the model you have is similar to the couple I have....

*The wheel pack cannot be viewed from the shackle hole and,
in fact looks to be in cased. Is this true for the one you have?

*You cannot lock it back up without the combination. Correct?

If this be the case, I DO have some thoughts I'd be happy to tryn' convey.
It will take some time to put into words though, lol.... so I first wanted to
ask you if you've already got it figured out. So any luck yet?

Cool. I'll put some words together this weekend. Maybe it'll help, maybe it won't.

Your looking at manipulation though... unless someone throws out another idea?
These can be manipulated closed, similar to how you'd manipulate them open.
Only difference is that you push the shackle IN rather than pulling it OUT.
It still applies pressure on the pawl, forcing it against the wheel pack.
Actually it's a little easier on the fingers than pulling the shackle.

Sorry for the delay.

The Slaymakers in question have no false gates, so you can be pretty certain anything you feel is a gate.
Combo padlocks are funny though... rarely will two (even of the same make & model) react exactly the same.
I've come along ways with combination padlocks since cracking the one earlier in this post. It's best to have a
number of different approaches with them.

General Info:

RIGHT = clockwise
LEFT = counter-clockwise
AWR = all wheels right
AWL = all whels left

The RLR dialing configuration is EXACTLY like a MasterLock Combination...
1. RIGHT 3 times... stop on 1st number
2. LEFT one full turn PAST 1st number... stop on 2nd number
3. RIGHT... stop at 3rd number. Pull shackle

Proper rotations for opening this one (and most combo padlocks for that matter) is RLR.
Obviously you can also use a LRL rotation too, but the combination will be quite different
because of the drastic pickup differences. For example, the one I opened above had pickup
differences of 15 & 7. So RLR.... 45 - 10 - 40 turned into LRL.... 55 - 3 - 45

Key to manipulating these is first understanding the wheel movement.
Wheel 3 (technically the drive cam in these locks) corresponds to the 3rd (last) combo #.
It's connected to the dial and moves with it. This is the only wheel you can move by itself.

I like to set my sights on w3 first. I do this by parking wheels 1 & 2 together in different
places around the dial... each time running w3 around while pressing on the shackle.
I place 1&2 in four different positions to see if any of them allow me to catch w3's gate:
12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Which on this dial is 60, 15, 30, 45. So lets try that...

AWL to 60. Apply shackle tension and go right one revolution. By doing this, you've parked wheels 1&2 @ L60
and you're now moving only wheel 3 around right. If you feel anything you know it belongs to wheel 3.
You might come to a solid stop when you hit the edge of the gate. Or, you might feel the pawl actually
drop into the gate and you'll be able to feel both sides of the gate as you move the dial back & forth.

If you don't feel anything, then you bring wheels 1&2 to the next position.... @ 45.
So again, AWL to 45. Apply shackle tension and go right one revolution.

If still nothing... well, you get the idea. Try feeling w3 out with wheels 1&2 at 30. And finally at 15.

Also try these four positions again, but from the opposite direction.
So you'd be parking 1&2 with a right rotation and running w3 left.

Whenever ya get around to it, see if your lock allows you to catch w3 and we'll go from there :)

I've yet to try this method but I should say after spinning the dial several times over I can see something (the pawl?) drop down slightly.

Wheel 3 catches at 5-10/11.

Good! So lets' figure we're safe directly between 5 & 10?
If ya feel good about what you felt we've got a start... X - X - 7.5

Keep in mind that w3's gate at 7.5 can now be dialed from either direction
& still land you in the same place (since w3 is connected directly to the dial).

So again, when ya feel up to it, let's see if the lock will offer anything else.
Obviously, we're looking at wheels 1 & 2 now. There's a couple different
routes you could try at this point. Lets keep it simple for now and try this:

All wheels around LEFT while pressing on the shackle.
Can you detect any drops or solid stops anywhere?
If not, try the opposite... all wheels around RIGHT.

Nearly a year old post, I know...

but for anyone who might happen upon this thread in
hopes of opening a lock - you might like THIS article.

P.S. although I was doing my best here to help warder
open his, I didn't entirely know what the hell I was talkin'
about, lol. Today I know a good bit more about these.
