Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but I'm just disappointed that the Skarp Laser Razor turned out to be probably A Scam :(

The future is not here until we can all shave with lasers.

Right after Kickstarter canceled their project they went to Indiegogo and received over $400,000 https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-skarp-laser-razor-21st-century-shaving#/

A writer actually got to try the prototype and it was extremely fragile and could only cut a couple arm hairs at a time. Going to be interesting to see where it goes from here.

Wow, Riy, you really need to tighten the chain on that chainsaw. Then you can get a closer shave.

Re: Shave of the day/night

I have been lurking this thread as this is something I have been interested in trying out. After the year end expenses I scraped enough money and took your advice Riyame. Bought the Razorock mission, Plissoft with barber handle, xxx, and alum.

For a few weeks now I have become somewhat obsessive over this new hobby. I haven't been able to justify much on locks lately but this is money I would be spending anyway. I even picked up Chiseled Face Sherlock with free shipping when ordering some other stuff on amazon. I enjoyed the mysterious smells when mounting another safe lock. Very atmospheric. My face finally looks good enough for a professional environment too!

With over 100 types of razor blades and hundreds of soaps I feel very spoiled for choice. This stuff is so cheap! Even the expensive parts that suck up money like the soaps. After measuring usage with a kitchen scale it looks like the soaps will last several months each and the alum has not lost a single gram. I now spend more on hot water and electricity to see during a shave than the stuff to shave!

Like what pmaxey83 said, I would like something more aggressive to match my tough face; a three-piece with a wider handle would be nice. My beard is just too thick and fast growing. Conveniently I am very blessed in that I am close to maggard's storefront. The images on their About Us page are gloriously overwhelming. I've never seen anything like it. The way they store and display razor blade brands is particularly pleasing:
Image

Somehow an excuse must be made to take the trip down there for shaving stuff and swinging over to Cabela's for good measure. It's pretty neat to have a local business that I can support. Do you have any experience with their razor line? Their MR8 is a monster, but the MR3 is nice too, if a little short. Many things are on sale right now including their shaving head bundle. The guy that runs the place with his wife is my kind of person too. Very detail-oriented IT guy. Even put sparse comments in his html. It is no surprise why he is so highly regarded for straight razor servicing and restoration with a massive gallery to match.

Does anyone have recommendations for soaps also? The smells are really fun. I already have 16 I really want and another couple dozen to get samplers of when the opportunity presents. Do other people keep lists of locks and such that they just go through when there's money to burn or am I too weird?

Re: Shave of the day/night

Awesome stuff Josephus. Welcome to the addiction :D

For sure take a trip down to Maggards, they know their stuff and you will be able to smell soaps before you buy which is a big plus. I would HIGHLY suggest samples and once you find more things you like in both scent and performance start splurging. That way you save money for locks or more razors

I don't have any experience with their razors but I have been using some of the vintage Gillettes lately and my open comb one from the 1930s gives me an amazing shave. Since you have a thicker beard that may be one way for you to go.

Other things instead of alum would be either cheap witch hazel, Thayer's Witch hazel (Which has moisturizing stuff) or my new favorite: Lucky Tiger. None of them sting and all do the same thing as alum. An alum block of not dropped will last at least a year with daily use.

So I found these two old razors in a drawer at my parents house.
The all metal one still has its box with Gillette written on it.
The other one has an interesting adjustment ring that pushes the blade up or down, I guess it's used to adjust how much it protrudes.
I may clean them and try to use them again.

Cheers :)

Nice finds! The black one is a Gillette "Super Adjustable" from the 70s-80s. There should be a letter and a number on the bottom of the razor head. It is a date code. Let me know and I can look it up for you.

The silver one in the case appears to be a 1950s Gillette "Tech" razor. The case should have "Made in England" on it. Again, it should have a date code on the bottom of the head. This would probably be the easiest razor to start with since you won't have to fiddle with the adjustment and make sure it is not overclocked.

Re: Shave of the day/night

Thanks Riyame, the black one, apart from the name and made in usa, has a P on the left side of the shaft and a 3 on the right.

The Tech has made in England in a circle behind the blue box, and behind the razor there's Gillette in a rhombus on the left and England on the right. No numbers.

On a side note, this was my setup this morning.

Cheers :)

So that would be 3rd quarter of 1971 for the black one. Odd that there is no date code on the silver one, but it should be 1956.
