Mortise deadbolt bypass?

So, I noticed something while looking at photos of locks,

If you look, it looks like the cylinder moves that piece that sticks into the hole where the cylinder goes, which is somehow linked to the bolt, so it turns the bolt.

Underneath the cylinder-hole, there's that ]-shaped slot/channel, and it looks like its purpose is to keep you from moving the bolt directly without using the key/knob.

Now, the hole that the bolt comes out of seems to have enough space above the bolt that you could stick a tool in between the doors, through the gap above the bolt, and pull on the part sliding in the ]-shaped slot, allowing you to move the bolt directly.

Now, I don't have one of these locks to try this on, could someone confirm/deny whether this is possible?

Welcome. Is this what you are talking about?

If so, google "Adams rite bypass."

FYI- it's not as easy as it looks.

No, I found that video while I was researching.

I'm asking about sticking a paperclip or somesuch in right above where the bolt comes out, and pulling the latch toward the top downwards.

Yes,
I've seen the tool, but can't remember who make it.
Clark Security Expo is where I saw it.
6 inch Flat wiper blade with a I/8 X 1/8 notch at the end about a 1/2 inch down
connected to a 3/16 Dim. rod at a 90 degree angle.
with another piece of flat stock at the other end.
Looked like I__I
Slip Inside, next to the bolt and reach up and grab the dead locking pin.
pull down and toward edge of door.
Use shove it tool to help bolt retract.

Sorry about the crude drawing.
Didn't get a chance to hold the tool in my hand, but was quickly waved in front of me.

Re: Mortise deadbolt bypass?

i got my hands on a bunch of adams rite locks after some friends demo'ed an old shopping plaza. they were so easy to pick i don't think bypassing them is even worth the trouble. not o say bypassing isnt a cool skill, just that those locks are anything but difficult, even for a novice. but learning the bypass tricks on certain locks is certainly good to know, withe the coming zombie invasion and all.

So I guess it's confirmed that this bypass exists and works, then?

Re: Mortise deadbolt bypass?

if you check out some of the firefighter destructive entry videos, they will use pliers to spin the mortise cylinder out of the lock, and a small tool or screwdriver to flip the latch open.

Re: Mortise deadbolt bypass?

Rerun, they take a standard mortise cylinder. The level of pick resistance can be changed at your whim! You probably ran into the original pot metal cylinders that most come with. In 10 seconds tho, I could ruin your day had you planned on picking it "because it's just an AR deadlock".

Re: Mortise deadbolt bypass?

Not what the OP was looking for, BUT... Sparrows and Peterson both make a tool that goes through the keyway and emulates the cam-action of the tailpiece. You could make one yourself out of music wire.
