The epoxy handled pick i was going to post decided to jump off the counter and onto the carpet while the poxy was still wet. Instead of presenting an offset half-diamond Chia-Pet, I just made something sans the fabric/epoxy handle.

Maybe look for more composite handled picks in the next couple of days. I'd like to find some new material for the handles maybe (paisley??).

Nice work, what sort of thickness is the picking end on that one?

Re: Tonights Picks

Lovely pick you’ve made there. 8-)

I love the homebrew stuff.
If you have a bit or time and a few tools, making a whole pick set it relatively easy.

Would also like to know what stock you used to make the pick itself?
Keep up the good work man. Absolutely lovely.

Normally I use knife blade stock because I prefer stainless steel in general. Knives, large grill spatulas are good sources of cheap stainless.
For this one, I used flat plumbing snake which is, I believe, .25 inches wide (maybe 3/8"). That pick is 6 pieces of it. 2 on bottom, 2 in the middle with one of those being the pick blade and 2 on top laminated together with epoxy.

Plumbing snake works well because it's already at a really nice thickness although I don't own a micrometer and couldn't tell you how thick they are.
I dislike really thin picks, though, and p-snake is a nice pick thickness, imho.

I don't have a micrometer so I don't really know but its thicker than the lockpicktools.com picks. I have a set of theirs and they are way way thinner than I am used to.

And thanks for the compliments guys!

*edit*
I just found out that the metal thickness is 1/32" (0.03125). It was on the packaging.

Re: Tonights Picks

I saw your other threads. You've been busy! I like the stainless handles man, very slick looking stuff. That ergo hook in you first thread is the shit! It must have taken forever to polish... I like this one's design too, nice lines.

The way you are coating fabrics with epoxy and sealing it is really very clever. Micarta is actually something similar. Layers of textile soaked and cured in a phenolic resin.

Thanks buddy!. yeah that pick did take ages to polish. And I have a TOPs knife with a micrta handle that gave me the idea for the handles I made the other night.
http://www.topsknives.com/popup_image.p ... 65&image=0

The material doesnt bend over curves and angles well, though. What TOPS and others do, is make the handle clamshells and then screw them onto the blade and then do some basic finishing to make the blade and the handles smooth and transitionless. I think I'll give that a go next. I have a few of that last pick's style I made (the rectanglish one) on commission to make then I'll try the handle idea.

Thanks again!

Yeah, I've been using the flat snake material lately too at $6.99 for 20 feet, it's hard to beat the price. It machines nicely with a dremel too. It's definitely not as strong as say wiper inserts though. Once I get a bench grinder, I'll probably start using stainless dinner knives or other knives, but that's just too much material to remove with a dremel. Gotta get the garage in order before I can even have a place to put much less actually USE a bench grinder. And well, the garage... that's a project in and of itself...

Those handles look the nuts mate. Loving the look. My list of things to make is getting bigger...
