Abloy Classic mechanical key reader / decoder

So I recently managed to get ahold of this neat little tool recently. It looks very old, and is made of brass. The back is stamped "No 1048". It has two displays that read different numbers. One seems pretty normal but the other seems pretty random.

Key goes here.

Reader with no key inserted. This reading is from the FIRST display.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures. :)

EDIT: After reading this: http://blackbag.nl/?p=555 it appears that the 2nd numbers are Abloy's customer code numbers.

This is awsome Chem. Where did it originate, is it Abloy? I would be interested in some history if you have any. Thanks for the great pics!

Very cool!
I´ve only seen plastic ones like on the picture on blackbag.nl.
Nowadays I use a little software that does the trick.
I have seen 3 different Abloy key readers all made of plastic;
-the blue one just like on blackbag is for Classic
-a red one, slightly bigger, is for Profiles. You really don´t need a gadget for those tho: keycut 0= code number 5, 1=4, 2=3, 3=2, 4=1 and 5=0.
-a red one for Tibbe. Yes Ford tibbe locks are made by Abloy and have a reader too. No code on that, just the keycut number.

I´m sure collectors would pay an arm and leg for your metal version.
Nice find!!!

So... does that mean you have code readers that you dont use that you might have for trade? :P

@Riyame, no. I´ve used one at my former employees shop, and seen those at colleques shops. I don´t own one.
And I just realized that the decoder program is on the hard disk of my old computer that crashed badly.
I´ve gotta search for it again and use a manual list of codes till I get it.

Cool little tool. Can you get the equivalent for Protec/newer Abloy's?

Yes you can. They all seem to be made from plastic though.

Re: Abloy Classic mechanical key reader / decoder

Heya!

We was cleaning our shop today and we found a similar Abloy Decoder No. 1360.
Any idea about the value ? Such a nice little object , works well.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Moi Teemu!
The plastic one costed around 100 euros years ago.
If you have a metal one someone could offer you more.
I dont have a use for those because keys are so easy to read by eye and codes can be converted.
Where`s your shop? A cobbler or a locksmith?

Re: Abloy Classic mechanical key reader / decoder

If anyone would be willing to dissasemble one and scan the parts I could trace them for a 3d printer file.
