HPC Pick Set - Duplicates?

I was looking at this site, and from the looks of it there are only 3 different rakes, 2 hooks, 1 diamond and 2 ball picks in the HPC color coded pick line. If this is the case, then if someone were to order the 35 piece Pick Pack then they would receive several duplicates, which doesn't make sense. If anyone has this set and can enlighten me then I would appreciate it. Thanks

Re: HPC Pick Set - Duplicates?

You are correct. aside from the silver picks being for a lighter touch, you WOULD just get extra's of each. However, that option is there for someone that wants backup's in their sets. I know I have broken my fair share of picks in the field, and it would absolutely suck if I didn't have more with me! :) hope this helps.

Those silver picks are actually broken key extractors.

Alright, glad I asked before I bought it. Speaking of breaking picks, how are the HPCs, strength wise?

They are very good. anything will wear with a lot of use, but as long as you're not too heavy handed, you'll get a lot of use from them.

Re: HPC Pick Set - Duplicates?

You can always buy your picks separately, if you don't want duplicates. Sometimes I think I buy the complete sets, just to get the case!

As for how HPC picks hold up: It depends heavily on how you handle them. I have HPC picks (and other brands) that I have had 30 years or more.

Buying the picks separately is definitely the best option, over at HL Flake they're less than $2 a piece. Unfortunately they have a limited variety in the color coded line.

Re: HPC Pick Set - Duplicates?

I have a set of the color coded HPC set. I agree that's they're nice picks. That set is actually my go-to set for most situations. The duplicates are nice because if I remember correctly the duplicates are of picks you will use the most. Althought all of my duplicates are put up so I dont lose them. Ive been using My HPC set for years and have only bent a few slightly here and there. I'm generally not heavy handed though. I think you would enjoy them. Hope this helps.

Re: HPC Pick Set - Duplicates?

The strength is good. I started off with Majestic picks during my first eight years of picking locks, and only broke 2 of them. So the HPC picks should do fine, if not a little better.

I keep a HPC short hook pick in my pick set that I only use it for American brand padlocks. I sanded it down a bit so it will fit. My Petersons are a bit too thick for a brand new lock with no wear on it.

Re: HPC Pick Set - Duplicates?

Would it not have fit if you didn't sand it down? And was your pick the .028 or .022?

It was the regular .028 spring steel pick (at least I think that's the standard thickness for that one). I don't know why it didn't fit. Maybe it was just that particular lock. Whatever the reason, the pick slid into the lock perfectly once I sanded it down to about a .021 thickness.

The Majestics are under-rated. They are a great pick for the beginner: they are cheap, they are durable and there is an over-sized hook which is intended to be customised for a given lock.

HPC also have their HPC-2000 range (all silver) which are quite thin and good for difficult key-ways but they do require a light touch because they will bend much more easily than the HPC blackened spring steel picks.
