Ammunition prices and availability

I have been looking for ammo for quite some time now for the upcoming deer season where I live, I am going to use my 30-06 this year, and not my 300 Magnum. I went everywhere to find something I thought was common, 30-06 is a common weapon and until recently you could find the shells anywhere, I looked everywhere and there is non to be had. I found a few boxes of the 300 mag shells, all for about 50 dollars a box!! I went to Washington state and found a box of the 30-06 shells finally, nearly 22 dollars a box, back in the day I bought these for around 10 dollars or sometimes less on sale if I remember right. And 22 shells for plinking cans, well, here in Oregon, have fun with that, you absolutely cannot find any, I have a bunch stocked up for my pistol shooting, so I am good! This economy has got to turn around!

Re: Ammunition prices and availability

I travel quite a bit and the shortage seems to be all over the country. There is a Bass Pro shop near my house...I stopped in a couple of weeks ago to get some .40 S&W ammo and they were totally out of handgun ammo...not just .40 ammo ALL handgun ammo! This is a store that usually has an entire aisle of ammo and the shelves were empty  Unfortunately, I have had similar experiences in several different states over the last several months. I have resorted to looking for small time dealers online that have small quantities in stock. All of the big retailers have ammo listed but then when you check out it says back ordered x number of weeks. I fell for that two months ago when Cabelas said they had a two week back order on some ammo...still waiting...
Good luck hunting this year. Hope you bag a 160+ B&C and we get to see some pics! ;)

Re: Ammunition prices and availability

Thats crazy, all the stores here that have had a big selection in the past, now have just empty isles, the only thing you can find is some off calibur ammo that never sold anyway. I hope I get a big buck, there are blacktail deer here, I have never hunted over on this side of oregon, I have always hunted in the eastern side of the state where there are just mule deer, the 30-06 I have that I am going to use, I never put a scope on, reason being is that it is extremely brushy here, almost reminds you of a tropical rain forest in some places, when you look through a scope here you just see limbs and leaves, I can't wait to shoot something so that I can provide for my family.

So are you living on the west side now? I like the west side of Oregon MUCH more than the east side. Not enough trees on the east side. You near Coos Bay by any chance?

Yep, I am on the west side now, just about 30 miles east of Salem, I am originally from eastern Oregon grew up in the country over by Baker City. I love the Oregon Coast I go there about twice a month, Coose Bay isn't far from here, maybe less than a hundred miles or so. Where are you from?

It's not the economy Kid - it's "gun ban fever" that's driving the prices sky-high on weapons and ammo. Tried pricing an AK47 lately? Plain old AK's that used to go for $300 are going for 4 times that much. And you know what? The speculators are buying them left and right, paying top dollar.

As long as these guys keep paying exorbitant prices for AK's and other weapons - and stockpiling ammo - the prices will never drop.

Re: Ammunition prices and availability

I talked to a manager in one of our well known Oregon based stores that sells ammo, he said that some people could see the writing on the wall and before everybody else panicked, these people bought box after box of almost every caliber of ammo that they had, now these people are reselling the ammo for double or triple the price because the stores don't have it but these guys do, they are making a killing and more power to them I guess, everybodys has to make money somehow, it's not like there is alot of jobs around here.

Re: Ammunition prices and availability

You mean like this?

Del Rio Federal Grand Jury Indicts Three in Ammo Smuggling Case

SAN ANTONIO, April 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- John E. Murphy, Acting U.S.
Attorney for the Western District of Texas, announced that a federal grand
jury in Del Rio, Texas, this afternoon returned an indictment against Fred
Farhat, the owner of Farhat's Boots and Jeans in Eagle Pass, Texas, and two
other individuals for conspiring to smuggle approximately 10,000 rounds of
ammunition into the Republic of Mexico.

The three-count indictment charges Farhat, 47, Noemi Carreon-Gonzalez, 33, of
Eagle Pass, Texas, and her husband, Ivan Ramos-Gonzalez, with one count of
conspiracy and a substantive count of smuggling ammunition from the United
States. Farhat is charged with an additional substantive count of smuggling
ammunition from the United States.

According to the indictment, the defendants conspired together on March 31,
2009, to purchase the ammunition from Oasis Outback L.L.C. in Uvalde, Texas,
then smuggle the ammunition into Mexico. Authorities allege that on three
occasions within a three-hour period, Farhat paid almost $6,000 cash for
nearly 10,000 rounds of .223 and 5.56 x 45 mm ammunition. The indictment
further alleges that Farhat transported the ammunition to his business,
repackaged the ammunition, then with assistance from Ivan Ramos-Gonzalez,
loaded the ammunition into Ramos-Gonzalez's vehicle. While on Bridge #1
attempting to enter Piedras Negras, Mexico, Ramos-Gonzales and
Carreon-Gonzalez hit a northbound vehicle, then fled on foot into Mexico.
Mexican authorities responding to the scene of the accident recovered all of
the ammunition, as well as gun magazines and pistol clips from the defendants'
vehicle.

Upon conviction of all charges, Farhat faces up to 25 years in federal prison;
Ramos-Gonzalez and Carreon-Gonzalez, up to 15 years in federal prison. Farhat
and Carreon-Gonzalez remain in federal custody; Ramos-Gonzalez is a fugitive.

This case was investigated by agents with the U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Brady is prosecuting this case on
behalf of the Government.

Re: Ammunition prices and availability

You guys know about the plan to register ammo right ? They can't prevent people from owning guns, so they will take away your ammo.

The story I heard was micro-marking bullets during manufacture, or putting microscopic coded pellets in the powder like they do in explosives. Then the CSI guys could find the little pellets during an investigation.

Any extra cost will be passed on to the little guy...

California's Terminator governator, tried making gun manufactures put a stamp on the firing pin of rifles that would mark a primer on a case to identify shooters, didn't work well for him, don't know the whole story but I don't think it was possible.

Yea I heard that too. It might not be possible now but I do believe in the future every bullet casing with have a serial number on it.

For an automatic - aftermarket firing pin, after market barrel, after market extractor. Case closed.
