Hello! Newbie with a S&G 6730

Hello there. Thank you for your time in reading this. My name is John and I was given a S&G 6730 I believe. 3 wheels. I am brand new to manipulation. I am very handy and wanted to give this a try due to being in quarantine. I got the first number almost instantly at awl 20. It was very apparent on the graph. I completed all 100 numbers to be sure. I did a high low and it appears to be wheel 3.

When I went for wheel 1-2 ar it was a flat line. The safe was dead.. I picked up very faint drop at 37 and 5. So I assumed 37 or 5 would have to be the 1 or 2nd wheel. In both cases 37 and 5 the high low test came through very faintly on wheel 2. So I tried all 200 combinations of ?-37-20 and ?-5-20. Non of them worked. I also tried assuming my high low was wrong and did 37-?-20 - 5-?-20 all 200 combinations. Also with no success.

Did I miss a step? Could I be doing something with the middle manipulation wrong. Also my contact points vary when searching for the 3rd number. I would think if I had the proper two numbers on 3-2 then that would be the starting point for the contacts for the last wheel and it should only get smaller from there. But it doesnt. It jumps bigger and smaller even with the same 3-2 wheel numbers.

This is my first safe attempt but I have very good eyes and very steady fingers and I feel like I am doing things correctly. However it's very possible that I am not. Please help. Thank you.

Look up the topic of "wheel parking". One wheel can cover the gate of the other and the other wheel can cover the gate of the first. In this case a low spot on one of these wheels must be found to be able to find on the other wheel something.

Assuming you are holding wheel three on 20.

Find the lowest spot you can on wheels one/two and park that also, then run the remaining wheel versus trying to do one/two together.

Always verify the results several times before moving to the next step.

I have searched but cant find a thread on how to find the low spots one specific wheel. For example. I know 20 is wheel 3. So I am hoping to find a low spot on wheel 1 so I can easily graph wheel 2 and then just trail and error wheel 1 to victory. Thank you for your time.

You can also just park W1 somewhere and test at a few points if W2 behaves differently. And the misattribution of a gate can also lead to a flat line.

If you graph 1 & 2 together, you should find a low point for both of them together. Park w1 at that spot and work w2 from there, always returning w3 to 20. On this lock, w3 will almost always show first, then w2, then w1 because of the way the fence lays across the wheels at a very slight angle.

I feel like I'm so close!

So I finally got a clear gate on wheel 1&2 right.

I graphed 1 and 2 right and wheel 3 to 20 left. I got a very clear three number gate on 35-36-37. So I determined its 36. There was another spot (as shown in the graph between 62 and 67.) However this was a much larger spot and as you can see the 36 gate is way more of a clean cut drop.

However! When I did my high low test.

I did right 46 - right 36 - left 20
The right 36 - right 46 - left 20

It identified as wheel 1 being 36. (From all my research this is bad luck)

Then I did a low test.

Right 26 - right 36 - left 20
Right 36 - right 26 - left 20

That also identified as wheel 1.. so poop.

So I can safely assume the combination is right 36 right __ And left 20 is my combination but i have no idea how to do wheel 1 with left spin... I tried graphing all wheels left with 1&2 between 42-30. Spinning wheel 3 to 20 left each time. And graphing left, the damn gate is masked! Flat line between 42 and 30 left (Again, I hear that is very unlucky on a s&g.)

Is there a way to accurately determine what 36 right is when spinning left? If I had to guess it would be 38L but I have had so much bad luck with this silly thing that I'm out of guesses.

Thank you all again for your time!

Update

I have tried every possible combination of

38L-?R-20L
?L -36R- 20L

A few suggestions:

1) It is possible to dial R-R-L. Dial W1 R to 36. Dial W2 L to 35 (a bit of a distance from W1 to not mess up with anything). Then you can dial W2 around R with W3 to L20.

2) Determine the offset of a direction change. Dial all wheels to 50. Change direction and feel where the wheels pick up. Older R6730 should have for W1 a change of turning 1.5 numbers further. So R50 -> L51.5 and L50 -> R48.5.

3) Do a W1&2 around L between 30 and 40 with W3@L20 or even R20. W3 should not change that much with a change. Or even better W1 around L with W2 to R36 and W3 to L20.

Finding the gate on wheel 1 is a good thing. You can set wheel 1 and leave it undisturbed while dialing the other two wheels only, both of which require fewer turns.

From your description, you've already been dialing RRL, so just do as MH says and take wheel 2 all the way to 35L, then back around right to 34 to start your graph. Pay attention to the number of turns like you've been doing.

Avoid converting direction if you can (RRL avoids it in this case). If you have to convert, it is recommended to find your pickups in the same direction you are converting. Since you found your gate going right, turn all wheels right to a chosen number, and turn back around left to find your pickups. As you seem to know, the last wheel to pick up will be your pick up difference for wheel 1. If the pick up point is past your chosen number, go past your gate number by that amount when converting. On a 6730, wheel 1 conversions are usually anywhere from spot on (no difference) to 3 numbers past.
