Welcome ianac1! There is a lot of good advice out there already and it depends on your budget and the kind of locks you want to open.

For example, Lock Noob on youtube did an extensive video on it which might get you going: https://youtu.be/klwzLePxbZY

A transparent lock can show you what you are doing, but not much else. Those sets of picks that come with them are normally pretty bad.

It's better to make or buy a training lock. The same channel has a video on that too, as do others. You will learn a lot from doing that and it's usable for practice, unlike the transparent one.

Welcome to the forum.
Dont feel bad about asking "silly" questions, we were all new at this once ;)
for training locks I would recommend trying to find a bunch of random locks for cheap on ebay or locally, dont go to the hardware store and buy all new locks you will feel ripped off after picking them all open in a day.
if you have money to burn and want to be fancy you can always pickup a cutaway lock but they are necessary to learn to pick. **Disclaimer I sell cutaway locks**
for picks check out one of the site sponsors or https://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/ all you need is a basic set to start (try to avoid the large sets you will never use half the picks)

we also have a chat here that can get busy at times that is worth checking out even if its just to say Hi.
