Re: Yard sale score

Great score.

I love carbon steel knives.

I've never seen one before (a corn knife). Got a chisel grind ........ makes sense.

Don't polish it up too much. It's the patena on carbon steel that makes it look cool, I think. I'd just get it as shiny as I could with steel wool.

Your knife though. You can do what you like. :D

Nice one !

Re: Yard sale score

Its a billhook, not sure intended use. Limbing is common for this size. I have used them for splitting bamboo as well. Bill hook family is huge. This is a right hand chisel grind. The handle is flatted to index with the grind. Much like a Japanese style knife. The only markings I could find are a large S and C.T. Sheltons Co sheffield. No real info I have dug up on it. I just planned to use it for yard work or trade.

The plan is to reprofile just the cutting edge. Oil the wood and tighten the collar. I love old patinas the most ill do is oil it. Leaving things like the spine un touched showing the use marks is what I think gives these old things so much character in the first place.

I dont know why I find it fun to refinish to working stuff like this and cast iron skillets and axes. But I have had much worse hobbies.

Edit CT Skelton Co sheffield is the maker. Kinda neat

Re: Yard sale score

New edge good and thick convex chisel. The handles been soaking up some linseed homebrew, cleaned the crusty rust off and a layer of gun grease.

Re: Yard sale score

Beautiful !!!!!!!

I didn't know about the handles being flattened on one side.

When you said you were going to spend some time on the grinder I thought that you were going to grind/polish it to a shine.

I've restored quite a few old carbon steel knives and posted some pictures here and got a comment once, that I should "shine it up".

OH THE HORROR !!!! :D :D

Great score and a very nice job.

Please post some more of your collection.

Re: Yard sale score

A Bilhook is a tool for Hedging. (forming a hedge from young saplings closely grown). You can split and weave branches. Knock in pegs. And some have a ridge on the back spine of the blade for hammering. The hook is also handy for weeding out willow herb from your young hedge.
