Master Commercial Padlocks

Ok, we have had this discussion awhile back on the differences on a Commercial and a regular Master padlock. I have picked both of all the popular commercial and the matching number in the regular, so far I see no difference, no spools nothing, they do cost more but I don't know why. I found a Master 21 commercial today in my box of locks, no spools and still easy to pick. if you look at them there not even beefed up at all, they just have different color plastic.

Honestly, I believe the real difference is in durability and weatherability.

Re: Master Commercial Padlocks

I just loaded this #21 Commercial with all spools, I thought I would make it harder to pick. No such luck, it still picks as easy as pie!!! There is no way to make these more secure, thats why they don't even try!!

Will it fit? This has the M1 factory cylinder in it right now, I was thinking the American would be too long, let me go try it!!

Re: Master Commercial Padlocks

My American cores are too long and the bible is too high for the retaining screw and trap door to cover, I tried some Pro-Series Master cores, they are slightly too long as well, I cant seem to change out the mechanism in these like you can in an American or the Master Pro-Series.

Re: Master Commercial Padlocks

The govt american 5200s cylinders are only 5 pins and they fit some master padlocks... the civilian 6 pin ones are too long. the cam is a touch different so a master cylinder wont go in the american padlocks but the american will go in the master...

Re: Master Commercial Padlocks

Commercial means better quality, more usage and longer life under heavy use.

Across the vast majority of locking systems, commercial never means more pick resistant, sometimes means higher brute-force security.

Re: Master Commercial Padlocks

It may be stronger or more weather resistant but I have to say that the breakdown of this lock looks no different to me than any other. Just a marketing stategy.

Re: Master Commercial Padlocks

I'd have to agree with magician a little bit but if you can pick it easy I wouldn't want to have it securing anything of value.

I'd rather use an Abloy Padlock for security!

there is a shroud over the keyway on the commercial.
and you wanna "american yer master"? swap out the pins...they are in the same diameter and lengths/increments.
it is quite funny,in fact to watch a skilled picker pick a master that has been unknowingly repinned
with serrated pins=)
have fun frankenlocking....

Re: Master Commercial Padlocks

I never thought of that!! That would actually make these locks more secure than right out of the package!
