Single handed picking

Got a sstory for ya,
I herd somewhere that someone did a video where they picked a lock with one hand, i remember thinking "wow impressive, i doubt I could do that"

but

I was testing some new LockNewbie21 picks and I almost dropped my lock
when I recovered my slip I realized how I was holding everythin... (attempting to describe it without pictures)

I hold my pick with 3 fingers.my thumb is on the bottom of the pick and my forefinger is on the top(imagine the OK signal... sorta)
My middle finger is on the pick shaft usually touching the face of the plug, but not always.

my ther 2 fingers are ether sticking straight up out of the way or sometimes my ring finger will be on the lock face...

for the tensor I use my pointer finger of my other hand(im not a thumb guy) and wrap the rest of my fingers around the lock(when applicable, and at this point this is how I was holding the lock)

now when I almost dropped my lock, I gripped the lock with all of my fingers and almost dropped my tensor(I was using top tension at the time) so I used my ring finger on my picking hand to grab the tensor... the realized  I can pick like this, So I continued to pick the lock using just one hand to pick...

Its quite exilarating.

I can remember watching people play Super Smash Bros. (somthing I go to tournaments for) with one hand and was always impressed, I even practiced doing that with one hand but never got good enough to only use on in a tournament... Picking with one hand is almost natural. It is a bit hard to insert the tensor and situate your pick before you start picking but once you begin its easier than 2 hands(due to mass amounts of feedback in one hand)

hope you enjoyed the story, no go pick locks with one hand... its fun

Re: Single handed picking

Great story! Very well described. Can we expect a one handed picking vid from you when you get back?

Re: Single handed picking

This story is sort of like when people have to adapt to missing an arm or fingers, you find a way and make do. I have a finger, the one next to my thumb on my right hand, has very little feeling from having the tip sewn back on, after it was squeezed off in a sawmill, (400 pound hydraulic squeeze pressed it off) I can pick fine with it, it is the main finger that I use to feel the feedback in my picks. I couldn't feel what I was doing at first but I adapted and I feel like it is normal now. I am glad though that it wasn't damaged so bad that I lost my finger, but I suppose that I would have adapted. I have a friend of mine who is a former professional bull rider and full time ranch cowboy, he to this day ropes off of his horse after losing his thumb, he says it is harder but he gets by just fine!
I have been in the souls of many women, but I always end up on the soles of there shoes.

Re: Single handed picking

well that is interesting... I dont guess I needed to adapt... but if I ever do NEED to, Im covered ;)

I find that when I use top tension I use my ring finger to controll the tensor, and for bottom tension I use my pinky... just somthing I noticed, I have forced myseld to use the other finger for the other tension... it works fine but its odd that I naturally switch like that... oh well... this is quite a learning expierience, Next up... using the other hand
