S&G Enviro stuff

image.jpg

So guys I picked this today and boy it's a huge lock.
I was taking to a retired rail guy, he stated that whenever these locks had problems which was very rare he would pop them open with a good wack of a track bar. Has anyone ever tried to brute force these things open? Also is there a way to remove this chain without drilling the rivit or cutting the chain?

Re: S&G Enviro stuff

Highly doubt thats possible. Perhaps he tried that once in his life and it worked out so now he tells the story that is works all the time but did he mention the condition of that lock? Perhaps it was rusted to bits? The lockbutcher has one where the shackle busted in half, no it wasnt cut or sawed, it for some reason just busted apart.

I accidentally won one on ebay, hasnt come yet but I agree with Gleb, no way that someone consistently brutes these things open

Maybe he unlocked it and it was frozen shut and whacked it to dislodge whatever was keeping it closed.

I mean you holding one in hand should see that its not possible. The super thick shackle and locking balls plus this isnt a chines copy but a well made lock in the great US of A by a great S&G (solute)

I've done this way more than I'm comfortable admitting...

Agree about brute force of a locked Enviro being near-impossible. Spent half the weekend picking, disassembling, and filing a key for a 102. Gained a new appreciation for how robust these are. Seems like even if you were slamming it with track bar, you'd wedge those balls tighter against the shackle rather than compromise them.

That is because they use a sintered body. Basically metal powder that molded and then heated. The energy from the bullet fractured it into pieces.
