Hey gents, bit late to the party but I just ran across this listing on ebay which has 2 104 keys side by side and they both have different "dots" on them. You can compare the keys and locks as they are all side by side. Hope this help cause I am also very curious what the dots actually mean.

Great find Papa Gleb,
I have been following along and also wondering,....the cut at the tip of right key looks to be about 15 degrees ahead of the key on the left.
Hope someone here at keypicking buys the locks and keys.

Thanks Harvee. Until these pictures, I have only seen the "dots" on the shoulder of the key, never the bow so thats interesting as well.

Interestingly is defines the differences between 0880 & 0881 locks pretty well (number of disc tumblers and number of unique keys available).

That's cool! what I don't understand is why are there different "possible keys" for K/D and K/A??? makes no sense

That's a convenient thing to say, but it's not true. Kansas City Southern used to use 0883 locks (they now use American); EJ&E uses two different keyed 0883 locks (different purposes), and Amtrak uses some 0883 locks.

Further, I have heard that some railroads are going to the 5-disc locks. (If anyone has specifics, please PM or post).

If you look at Stanley's RR product offerings, or talk with their RR sales reps, it's clear they will and do sell all three S&G enviro locks to railroads.

No, it is true about the 80 and 81 versions. They will not sell the 3 disc version or keys to civilians. You can only buy the 5 disc version.

The smaller 0883 is available to everybody and a lot of railroads use them for things other than switches etc.

Sorry, I read this thread with RR colored glasses: I read it as being stated that RRs wouldn't buy anything but 0880.

Wait Im lost, why or how is Stanley involved? Isnt Sargent and Greenleaf an independant company?
I was very surprised to learn that Stanley makes Best Access Systems but what else do they make?
