BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

After sending Oldfast a BEST padlock from a lot I purchased nearly a year ago, I figured I finally ought to give one a go.

Literally about three minutes later...

Great work! Feels good doesn't it? How about a picture of the tools you used?

Re: BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

...was starting to think it was a fluke but got it again about fifteen minutes later.

As for tools used, just a standard carbon steel Peterson Short Hook and a wiper blade insert tension wrench. As some can tell this is the 'A' keyway which lends itself well to bottom of the keyway tension, whereas I usually use TOK for anything else.

Still trying for the operating line, but that would just be icing on the cake.

The only other BEST padlock I've picked to the control line was a little five pinner that was floating around the community for a while. I'm pretty sure Jimmy-slim Smith had it at one time and I traded run4yourlife24x for it a few years back. I believe that was the 'D' keyway which was also conducive to BOK tension...

But I digress..

As far as the operating line goes, I suppose you should be using tok there so as not bind up on the control lug.

Re: BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

How come everyone can pick to the control line ,but not the operating line ?

It's th opposite for me, I get the operating most times, but not to the control.

I'm still trying to get a 5 pin Best to the control, open it all the time, but that's not what I want to do.

If you have a control key Koko. please tell me the bittings.

The reason is they use BOK tension and unwittingly dig the TW into the control sleeve, so it acts just like you had an icore tool. IMHO, it works better than the icore tool actually. Just dig in hard with BOK tension, you'll get control no problem! Oh yeah, and if the core isn't in a housing, you can just push on the control lug with your finger while picking even with TOK.

Re: BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

Damit rbrande1. I was about to go to bed (2:30am) then I seen this and ya got me all excited LOL. Since getting your carepackage today I picked the 1100 twice on my 1st two tries in under a minute each (must have been all the practice I got while that series 50 kicked my ass for 2 wks LOL). But I had yet to put my pick in the BEST (yep, that still sounds just as kinky as it did the 1st time I said it LOL). So, back to the lockroom I go. Anyway, at around 3 am...............

A medium slimline hook and the peterson prybar lite. Thanks again for the locks! It amazes me the generosity of the members here and the lengths they will go to with no other motive other than to help someone enjoy this wonderful hobby. Man, I've got to go to bed! Tommorrow I'll start tackling the 28 locks that also arrived today from SlickPick

Re: BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

Awesome. Just awesome.

Did you feel any spools in there? I thought I was on false set once, but couldn't tell for sure.

As for the BOK tension, I was using a very small wrench and it definately wasn't biting into the control sleeve, but the angle of force on the wrench could have something to do with it, maybe.

Looks like Oldfast got his with TOK though.

So, what are your first impressions of the prybar lite? Do you have the original prybar as well?

Re: BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

Very very rarely do you ever find a security pin in BEST locks, they are almost always standard drivers and master wafers.

Re: BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

Yeah I think there are only one or two different sized drivers that are offered as spools, but it does happen. That five-pinner I mentioned earlier has several. It just depends on whether those driver sizes come up in the pinning, and also if the locksmith chooses to drop them in. The reason I asked was because both these locks were keyed on the same system, and had the same control key, therefore most likely had much the same drivers. If Oldfast did get a false set, that would verify that what I felt was probably one as well.

This is much like the KABA peaks system, that has a number 10 spool and a number 6 spool. Rarely used, but can come up from time to time.

Re: BEST 6-pin padlock picked to control line

I was actually quite surprised and excited that I hit the control line after about 20 mins, as I've never dealt with these locks or multiple sheer lines. Considering the bittings on the control key were all a bit more shallow than the operating key, my thoughts were: 1) a little extra tension might help me avoid setting pins beyond the first sheerline, and 2) pay very close attention to which pins I've set, so as not to set any pin more than once. I don't think I felt any securtiy pins, but I could'nt say with any certainty (I think I was 1/2 asleep by this point LOL).

My thoughts on the prybar: (only have the LITE .040) If your itching to get one, but for whatever reason don't want to spend the $ yet, don't feel like your missing out on a "miracle tool". I think everything and anything is very doable without it. On the upside- the feedback received from it is very good. The downside- for me, it leaves my hand in a rather uncomfortable position in comparison to most of my homemade tensors. Also, it can fall out of the keyway fairly easy, but this could be do to my inexperience with it (I've only used it twice- once on each of your locks). Overall, I'm liking it. Worthwhile investment and a good addition to the toolbox.
