Cote de Pablo
Ziva David
She is an actress on a TV show. NCIS. She is able to picks most if not all locks in a matter of seconds.
I have misplaced the list I used to carry with me. Yes, I am forgetful.

Character on TV show, NCIS. Special agent able to pick locks in seconds.
Lost my list awhile ago. I would add lube before picking.
your list or anyones list would be different depending on experience, skill, tools, areas, lock types.
And your list should always be growing.

sorry: double post

Sometimes, for whatever reason, a lock just wont open.
I carry a good amount of replacement locks, but no way can have every brand, size, shape, and finish.
So if I need to drill , I can be sure to secure the property and occupants. The job may require to special order their lock and a return visit.
I have a long laundry list of procedures.
Walk the property(usually unlocked door or window.)
look for the hidden key
Garage door
what kind of locks(dead bolts vs knob).
find weakest link in security and attack.
Bypass (slip latch, under door tools)
Bumping
Picking
raking rocking zipping
EPG: electric pick guns
Snap gun
Single pin picking
I'm going to get in.
Just a matter of time.
I try not to do any damage.
If I do, it has to be repairable.

jharveee,
Thanks for the excellent check list :)
Anything else you would add to it? Or anybody else have things to add?
Cheers,
Sean

Thanks guys for your help and encouragement. This week has been just as crazy as last Sunday when I posted this. It seems like it's been just one problem after another. Every day I had at least one job that became a major issue, and a couple days this week I ended up working about 12 hours (I might post more about those jobs later). I hope this week goes better.

jharveee - Is that the order you typically follow? I typically start out raking, pick gunning, then bypassing, ect.
I did try to unscrew the cylinder, but I didn't have the blanks to impression it.

just1pick+open - That's a good idea, I should get some composite keyway cylinders on my truck.

rai - It was cold, and I'm sure it didn't help it was getting late and I hadn't eaten lunch. I used Houdini lock lubricant on the locks before I tried picking.

I get the "on TV they would have it open already" comment a lot. Usually once they say it, they realize how stupid their remark is, and comment "That's probably fake isn't it?"

There's always those people who want to stand inches away from you to watch. They think they'll figure out the "magic" by seeing what you do. I even had a man climb into my van behind me to watch (I made him leave). Another time, I had bad gas, and my customer found out what happens when you stand right over top of me.

Re: Feeling defeated

For me the order depends on mostly who I'm working for.
Sheriff eviction, up against security door with multiple locks and the sheriffs are itching to get to other calls.
I might go for destructive entry first.
Home owners I always treat their property with care, which takes more time.
Different locks, different methods.
If I see a spring latch and I can loid it I will.
Maybe an ice pick attack on the dead bolt.
I usually work out the order on site while walking around.
Quite often I find the key under the mat.
Medeco=Drill
kwikset=picking(rake,rock,zip)
You get the idea.
I wouldn't show up to a Sheriffs lockout with only a pippin file and a handful of key blanks.
I can remember a job I couldn't pick my way in and called my boss for help.
Took him about two hours to come.
He told me to keep trying till he arrived.
Down town, San Diego, 4th floor condo.
One way in.
He ended up jumping from the walkway we were on to an open window. Leaped out into thin air, 4 floor above concrete.
Won't catch me doing that.
That would not be on my list.

I used to do a lot of residential work in a retirement community. Old women will let them rip unapologetically. You look at them and they just shrug and some will say something like "When you get to my age you'll understand."

One time I was holding one in and the old lady let it rip. She was kind of a spunky old lady so I let looses with mine and said "Two can play at that game." She laughed her ass off. I got a nice tip from her too.

Re: Feeling defeated

Just got back from my cousins, bested by a Schlage. Again. lol
This piece of humble-pie went down easier than it has in the past.

We did get in eventually... but it wasn't through the lock.
Pretty sure it had T-pins. I'll have to work on those I guess.

Oldfast,
So , how did you get in?
Does it really matter?? As long as you got in.
You're not locked out.

It's hard to focus on the job at hand when people are making comments behind your back.
Something you have to figure how to deal with. I just try to block them out and narrow my view and hearing to the lock.

I answer those comments with,"That's TV. In real life they put tumblers in the locks!"

You're not locked out.

I first tried a credit card (a rather thin one). I could feel I was awfully close with it, but gave up quickly.
Apparently I resorted to picking too soon... because we later got in with a credit card (a thicker one).
