"junk locks" from the shop
So I found a box in the shop with about 40 Medeco Biaxials and my boss said it was cool to check them out so I did. I found 10 I really liked but because I don't feel like taking a bunch of locks from the shop that they could sell and at the same time not being really sure how many I was allowed to take I am going to go see if I can buy the rest I liked soon. Here are the three I got. Check out the old Medeco in the middle.

G'dammit man, those are nice... I've had a hell of a time even trying to get quite literally 'junk' from a small local smith, I've even just given him things as a good gesture. Wish I was near your shop

You give him stuff but he doesn't give anything back?

I went in initially asking about scrap locks, they said they do end up with them and to come back at the end of the month. So I did, this happened twice, so the next time I went in and gave him some custom picks just as a show of my interest/seriousness/bribe/whatever. Another month went by, still nothing, I'm not a smith but I would assume that in a 3-4 month period he would have come across at least something that he wasn't going to refurb/reinstall.
He did however offer me an apprenticeship at minimum wage for 40 hours a week, I'm pretty sure that was to discourage me from coming back.
Re: "junk locks" from the shop
Yeah that could be it. I would say try and find a new locksmith.
Re: "junk locks" from the shop
Wow, what a douche. It's not like your customs are made out of bobby pins and paper clips, those things are worth some money. Hell, wish I had more locks, I'd be throwing them at you if you were handing out picks.

So any news on the old Medeco in the middle? Picked or gutted it yet? Looks cool... don't think I've seen one with a logo like that.

WOW! And you didn't take him up on the offer? Apprenticeships in locks-shops ( in the US anyway ) are few and far between. Most are reserved for family members or friends. The owner clearly sees you have potential.
You may wish to stand back and look at this from a different perspective.
Your initial contact included asking for junk locks , You can be sure saving junk locks you for isn’t / wasn't real high on his priority list, partially because there is little or no money/ benefit involved .
This man has a small business that requires a lot work in different areas of expertise ( accounting, inventory, marketing, janitorial etc) in addition to day to day locksmith business.
Taking on an apprentice is a huge liability, it will be a while, before an apprentice will be up to speed and able to be a asset to the shop. Meanwhile the apprentice gets a paycheck and will make mistakes that require the assistance of a more experienced person to fix. ( this all costs money/time)
He has offered you ( from his prospective) a pretty sweet deal: you get locks to play with and hands on knowledge about the trade. He gets an employee who hopefully can be an asset to his company in the future.
If the idea of an apprenticeship doesn't appeal to you for what ever reason, you should be courteous enough to thank him for considering you.

Re: "junk locks" from the shop
I think the problem there is the 40 hours a week. I would love to apprentice as a locksmith but I'm already working 50 a week for a good deal more than minimum wage (I think anyways, no idea what it is in Canada). I could work a few more hours a week, but no way I could do 40 at that pay.
This is assuming Violaetor has a regular job that is, and I'm assuming he does since he apparently hasn't taken that apprenticeship. Honestly if his situation is anything like mine I completely understand why he hasn't.

Here you go oldfast! I should have gone to bed a while ago so I could wake up for work tomorrow but I needed to get it open for you to see.

VERY NICE SCORE! I have an old logo lock like that that I got from a member on Garage Journal who is a locksmith.
