Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration
Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration
I think I am on to something good here. I believe that this lock (previously shown) is specially designed for a user and a master key. One of the lever tumblers is notched or stepped, and there is a rotational limiter behind the tumbler stack. This would make sense, because if one was to turn the key clockwise it would open the lock and stop at one point, and if turned counterclockwise, a different function of tumbler behavior can be observed requiring a different cut key to match the notched tumblers. In either case, the key would have to be reversed for key removal, rather than a full 360 degree rotation.
I machining the key blank now.

So will you make a user and master? Or just one or the other?
macgng; it's completely unnecessary to have ~15$ in keys for a 50¢ lock ... but we all do it anyway
Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration
I'm going counterclockwise...whatever that is.
Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration
I'm interested to see how this turns out

Me too. I have never seen a 10 bitted key before of this type (so much for eight lever, I'm thinking "upside-down airplane"). The fabrication of the key is a logistical nightmere from bar stock. But my special jig (as discussed in my book) makes the production a lot easier. I'm using Aluminum-Bronze.

I hope you are taking lots of pictures. Too bad I have to pay to see the end result.

lol. Not wrong. Maybe mistaken. But not wrong. lol
So is it safe to say that there's always a possibility that at least SOME of these can be picked?

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration
Making a key can be really challenging when dealing with double bitted, 6-lever padlocks with a keyway profile that is off-set. Keeping the bow perpendicuar and the bit section at opposing angles is difficult. This is no longer a problem with my latest jigging technique. Here's my latest SHINY bronze key. Thanks to the help of a sacraficed speed square, I was able to jig the stock piece in my drill press just right.

Sometime's on a lazy day, I'll spend hours surfing Ebay looking for the best deals. Usually, I can find them within the first hour of the 7 day listing and you would be supprised what you can buy.
How much would you pay for this working SLAYMAKER "NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILR0AD" padlock with an original key (oops Ebay, one got through )?
$10.00 US. "Buy it now".
