Not a Mauer expert, but that looks like it is a spring-loaded lever that would interact with the side of the key. Would guess the key has a cut on the side that that part fits in, allowing the lock core to rotate. It would block rotation of the core if not positioned correctly.
Would likely help in bumping attacks, but no real challenge added to picking.
