Re: Cole file cabinet with safe

Does this dial lock have a peephole?

I peeked through the mounting holes on the side and on the back. I could just make a small hole in the back right across the lock and try to align the wheels. Any opinions?

This lock does have a hole in the back case through which you could peep.

Yes! Peeping through a small hole in the back wall did the trick. It finally opened! :D

So, now knowing your combination...is there any way to decipher the number code found in the back of your drawer?

No, it seems arbitrary to me. In my case, the dial sequence is 3L - 2R - 1L (drops the fence) then R to stop (retracts the bolt). The dial measures 3" and the lock's imprint says 8103-1, so it might be the 8100 series.

Re: Cole file cabinet with safe

Hi,
My Dad has one of these Cole safes, forgot the combination, hasn't been opened in 40 years. I found the number behind the Drawer (209423) and tried all the decoding implied by the messages here but none have worked (4-3-2-1,3-2-1-0, L,R ,reverse, add/subtract etc.). We know the combination hasn't been changed. I suspect I haven't tried the real "decoder trick" mentioned in this thread. Any help in trying to get this thing open after all this time?
Thanks!

Re: Cole file cabinet with safe

Hello, I am new to this group. I just acquired one of the Cole Steel filing cabinets with the safe. I don't have the combination but I have the 6 digit code behind the filing cabinet drawer. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated in decoding the numbers. Thanks
